Every Diwali, every birthday, every Sunday afternoon — I had a camera in my hands before I had a plan. My parents' laughter, my grandmother's sari catching the light, the dog stealing a ladoo. I didn't know I was building a career. I thought I was just trying not to forget.
“Light doesn't ask permission.
Neither does a good moment.”
2011. My parents' garage in Brampton, Ontario. A white bedsheet pinned to the wall with thumbtacks, a single halogen work light borrowed from my uncle's toolbox, and a DSLR I'd saved three summers for. My first clients were my cousins. They charged me in samosas. The photos were honest, the light was terrible, and I was completely hooked.

Her name was Meera. She was 81. She'd flown from Pune to meet her first great-grandchild — a boy born three weeks early, small enough to fit in one hand. I almost didn't press the shutter. It felt too private. Then she looked down at him and I understood: this is exactly what photographs are for.
“She called me three months later. She said that photo was the last one taken before she got sick. She said it was the only thing she wanted with her in the hospital.”
— Kavitha R., client since 2016
